Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 ½ cups chopped peeled apples (about 2 medium apples)
  • Optional: ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • Optional: Glaze (1 cup powdered sugar, 2-3 tablespoons milk, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter and granulated sugar until well combined.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Gently fold in the chopped apples and nuts (if using).
  7. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs attached.
  9. Let the brownies cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  10. If desired, whisk together the glaze ingredients until smooth and drizzle over the cooled brownies. Cut into squares and serve.
