  • 1 recipe for double pie crust
  • 6 medium baking apples (like Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Line a 9-inch pie plate with one pie crust.
  3. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, combine 1/2 cup flour, oats, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips.
  7. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the crust starts to brown too quickly, you can loosely tent it with foil.
  8. Let the pie cool for at least 2-3 hours before slicing and serving.

  • For best results, use a mix of apple varieties for balanced flavor and texture.
  • You can prepare the crumb topping ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
