Make the ultimate savory and creamy French Onion Dip from scratch. This recipe uses slow-cooked caramelized onions for deep flavor, making it a crowd-pleasing appetizer perfect for game day or any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar (optional, for deeper caramelization)
  • 16 ounces sour cream, full fat, chilled
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Slice the onions thinly. In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter with the olive oil.
  2. Add the sliced onions, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 40 to 50 minutes until the onions are deeply browned and very soft. Add the brown sugar during the last 10 minutes if using. Remove from heat and let the caramelized onions cool completely.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the chilled sour cream and softened cream cheese. Beat them together until smooth.
  4. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder until fully incorporated.
  5. Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the sour cream mixture. Mix gently until the onions are evenly distributed.
  6. Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  7. Before serving your party dip, taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Garnish with fresh chives. Serve cold with chips, crackers, or vegetables.

Notes

  • For a quick snack recipe, you can speed up the onion cooking by adding a splash of water and covering the pan for 10 minutes to steam them slightly before uncovering to brown.
  • This dip is excellent served warm; gently heat the mixture in a slow cooker or oven-safe dish (325°F) for 20 minutes before serving as a hot onion dip recipe.
  • If you want an easy onion dip recipe without caramelizing, substitute the cooked onions with one packet of dry onion soup mix stirred into the sour cream base.
