Ingredients
Scale
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup hot brewed coffee
1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
4 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
1/2 cup cocoa powder (for frosting)
1/4 cup heavy cream (for frosting)
1 teaspoon espresso powder (optional, for depth)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, 3/4 cup cocoa powder, granulated sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for two minutes.
Carefully stir in the hot coffee until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin.
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
To make the frosting, beat the softened butter in a large bowl until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and 1/2 cup cocoa powder, alternating with the heavy cream. Beat until smooth and fluffy. Add espresso powder if using.
Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread about one-third of the frosting evenly over the top.
Place the second cake layer on top. Frost the top and sides of the entire cake.
Decorate the cake with deep, earthy tones or a simple constellation pattern to reflect the Capricorn aesthetic.
Notes
For a truly grounded flavor, substitute 1/4 cup of the coffee with strong brewed spiced chai tea.
If you are planning your weekly meals, this cake pairs well with a simple meal planning approach for the rest of the week.
Use high-quality cocoa powder for the deepest chocolate flavor.
