This easy, one-dish casserole combines classic meatloaf flavors with a crispy, cheesy tater tot topping for a satisfying family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 (32 ounce) bag frozen tater tots
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, milk, onion, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently with your hands until just combined; do not overmix.
  3. Press the meat mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish to form the meatloaf base.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and water until smooth. Pour this mixture evenly over the meatloaf layer.
  5. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the soup mixture.
  6. Bake for 45 minutes.
  7. Remove the dish from the oven. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the tater tots.
  8. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes, or until the tots are golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute half the ground beef with ground pork or turkey.
  • You can prepare the meatloaf base and topping the night before, cover the dish, and refrigerate. Add 10 minutes to the initial bake time if cooking directly from the refrigerator.
  • Serve this hearty American comfort food with a simple side salad or steamed green beans.
