Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Form into 4 equal patties.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned. Remove patties from skillet and set aside.
  3. Add sliced onion and mushrooms to the skillet. Cook until softened and lightly browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Push the vegetables to one side of the skillet. Add butter to the empty side. Once melted, whisk in flour to create a roux. Cook for 1 minute.
  5. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  6. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
  7. Season gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Serve hot, ideally with mashed potatoes.

Notes

  • For a Salisbury steak style, you can add a splash of soy sauce to the gravy.
