Learn the simple stovetop technique for making bright green, tender-crisp steamed broccoli. This recipe includes instructions for a rich garlic parmesan topping, similar to popular restaurant sides.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large head of broccoli, cut into uniform florets
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the broccoli: Wash the broccoli florets and trim the stems. Aim for uniform pieces so they cook evenly.
  2. Set up the steamer: Place a steamer basket inside a large skillet or pot. Add 1/2 cup of water to the bottom of the pot, ensuring the water level is below the bottom of the steamer basket.
  3. Steam the broccoli: Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, cover the pot tightly with a lid. Reduce the heat to medium-low to maintain a steady simmer.
  4. Cook until tender-crisp: Steam the broccoli for 4 to 6 minutes. Check for doneness by piercing a floret with a fork; it should be tender but still offer slight resistance. This keeps your vegetable side dish bright green.
  5. Drain excess water: Carefully remove the steamer basket and discard any remaining water from the pot.
  6. Prepare the topping: In the same warm pot (off the heat), melt the butter over low heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Do not let the garlic brown.
  7. Toss and serve: Return the steamed broccoli to the pot with the garlic butter. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper. Toss gently until the cheese melts slightly and coats the florets. Serve immediately as a quick healthy side recipe.

Notes

  • For a microwave method, place florets in a microwave-safe bowl with 2 tablespoons of water. Cover and microwave on high for 3 to 4 minutes until tender-crisp.
  • To achieve a Texas Roadhouse inspired side, skip the Parmesan and instead toss the hot broccoli with 1 tablespoon of melted butter, a pinch of salt, and a small dash of garlic powder.
  • If you do not have a steamer basket, you can place the broccoli directly into about one inch of boiling water and cover the pot. Cook for 3-4 minutes, checking frequently to prevent sogginess.
