Ingredients
Scale
1 sleeve (about 4 cups) saltine crackers
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped pecans or candy canes (optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil and arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer to cover the bottom of the sheet.
In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the butter melts and the mixture comes to a full boil. Let it boil for exactly one minute without stirring.
Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, spreading quickly to cover them completely.
Bake for 5 minutes. The toffee should look bubbly.
Remove the sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let the chocolate sit for 3 to 5 minutes to soften.
Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the crackers. If you are adding pecans or candy canes, sprinkle them over the chocolate now.
Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely firm.
Break the hardened toffee bark into irregular pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
Notes
This recipe is often called Christmas Crack because it is so addictive and popular during the holidays.
For a salty finish, sprinkle a little flaky sea salt over the melted chocolate before chilling.
