Recreate the classic Philly cheesesteak experience at home with this easy-to-follow recipe. Featuring thinly sliced ribeye, caramelized onions, and your choice of cheese on a fresh hoagie roll.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ribeye steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 4 slices provolone cheese, or 1/2 cup Cheez Whiz, or 4 slices American cheese
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, melt butter and olive oil over medium-high heat. Add sliced onions and cook until softened and lightly caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Remove onions from skillet and set aside.
  2. Add thinly sliced ribeye steak to the same skillet. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until the steak is browned and cooked through, about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Return the caramelized onions to the skillet with the steak. Stir to combine.
  4. If using provolone or American cheese, lay slices over the steak and onion mixture. Cover the skillet for 1-2 minutes to melt the cheese. If using Cheez Whiz, stir it into the steak and onion mixture until melted and combined.
  5. Slice hoagie rolls lengthwise, but not all the way through. Lightly toast the inside of the rolls if desired.
  6. Divide the steak and cheese mixture evenly among the prepared hoagie rolls.
  7. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a true Philly experience, ask your butcher to thinly slice the ribeye, or freeze the steak for 30 minutes before slicing yourself.
  • Onions can be cooked “wit” (with) or “witout” (without) the steak, depending on your preference.
  • Bell peppers are an optional addition. Slice and sauté them with the onions if you like them.
  • Experiment with different cheese combinations for your perfect cheesesteak.
